Zebra Swallowtail with its wings spread.
The Zebra Swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus) is a medium-sized butterfly with a bright color and recognizable markings.
It’s easy to see where this guy gets his name. The striped pattern on its upper and lower wings is very zebra-like. My impression is that this is one of the more rare swallowtails in Maryland as I have not seen Zebra Swallowtails nearly as often as the Tigers and other dark swallowtails.
My only photographs have come at Eastern Neck Island Refuge – once in the early spring and then later in the mid summer.
The Zebra moves fast from flower to flower without too much lingering, has a long flapping motion to its wings and flies quick and direct.
